5 Questions With: The Bones of J.R. Jones
“5 Questions With” is a series spotlighting some of Brooklyn’s most exciting and influential creatives. (You can explore our archive of picks here.)
Jonathan Linaberry got his start in the hardcore punk scene, but you’d never know it by listening to The Bones of J.R. Jones, his current musical iteration. Riding the line — train tracks? — between old-timey blues and clap-along-folk, Linaberry churns out highly listenable ear worms that are guaranteed to have you humming to yourself on the next subway ride home. His self-released debut, Dark Was the Yearling, hit shelves this summer — but we recommend catching this act live. Your next chance comes September 12th at Mercury Lounge, when he’ll open for Goodnight, Texas. Until then, check out his fave Brooklyn picks, after the jump.
Record Listened to Most in Your Life? I guess that would have to be Springsteen’s, Nebraska. I wasn’t introduced into this album until later in life…. but I think I’ve managed to make up for time loss. I feel like I spend most of my time on long drives these days and somehow this album always finds a way to keep my company.
Brooklyn Based band to look out for? My good friend, Melaena Cadiz. Her songs are a simple and catchy folkish country… but what grabs you is her voice.
Fave place to see a show? Brooklyn Rod and Gun for sure. It’s small. Personal. The shows always feel like you’ve been invited to a friends house party and you just happened to catch a kick ass band. This place has personality and hospitality.
Fave Brooklyn bar? The Alibi. Some great memories here. Some so good I don’t remember them.
Go-to Drink? Old Fashioned, Bourbon, Beer… in that order.
