Yet Another Great White Shark Was Caught In The Rockaways This Weekend, This Time By 12-Year-Old Kid
In what is almost definitely part of a viral marketing ploy to promote Sharknado 2: Shark Happens, someone caught yet another baby Great White shark on the Rockaways this weekend. That someone was a 12-year-old who just became the coolest kid in the seventh grade.
Bobby Jahrnes, his father Bob and his 12-year-old son, Kai were fishing five miles off of Rockaway Beach when Kai felt a tug on the line, according to DNAinfo. “When it got to the boat my father said, ‘That’s no blue shark,” said Bobby. Though the 80-pound baby was immediately released (hunting Great Whites has been a federal crime since 1997), Kai, who will never again be without a date to the Valentine’s Day Dance, was “ecstatic” about the catch.
On the off-chance that the upsurge in Rockaway sharks is not being bankrolled by the SyFy channel, however, experts believe it’s due in large part thanks to conservation efforts cross the Atlantic Ocean since the early 1990s. Jahrnnes has also noticed cleaner waters around the Rockaways and Breezy Point, where they live. “There’s more bait, and it’s why we’re seeing a lot of whales and dolphins on shore,” he said. Dolphins and whales? Cool. Sharks? Um, we’ll be at Long Beach.
