Photos: At the Best New Brewery in Brooklyn
If you were to ask beer nerds in and around Brooklyn what’s currently the most promising new brewery in a city that’s basically overflowing with promising new breweries, there’s a pretty good chance every single one of them would tell you it’s Other Half Brewing. The Gowanus-based operation was founded by Sam Richardson and Matt Monahan, both of whom got their start under KelSo’s Kelly Taylor at Greenpoint Beer Works.
To say that they specialize in IPAs would be an understatement: On a recent visit to their newly opened tasting room, six of the eight beers on tap were variations of the style. It would also be an understatement to say that they do them well—they’re already making a handful of the best IPAs anywhere in the city, and maybe even in the entire Northeast (that means you too, Vermont.) There’s the regular Other Half IPA, a basic but brilliantly executed West Coast-style example, another one called Hop Showers that packs a little extra punch, with tons of pine and bright, tropical fruits. Climbing further up the ABV ladder—the basic IPA and Hop Showers are 7% and 7.4% respectively—you’ll find the 9.1% Green Diamonds, which brings even more tropical fruit to the table, along with lots grass and sticky sweet malts. It’s the best new beer I’ve tried in a really long time. Although maybe I’d say otherwise if I’d had the chance to try All Green Everything, their 10.5% triple IPA that people are currently going crazy for.
Consider paying them a visit (195 Centre Street, Friday from 5-8, Saturday from 12-8, Sunday 12-6) or at the very least be on the lookout for them at better beer bars all over the city. And check out the photos below, by Robert Caputo.
