Gimme Shelter: The Homes of 8 Brooklyn Professionals
What sort of details might you find in the home of an architect? Concrete floors? Steel and wire-glass panels used as room dividers? Metal posts and beams and brick barrel vault ceilings? Well, in the case of Janelle Gunther, yes! All of these industrial, structural elements are what you first notice when you enter her apartment, and they’re all features that first made Gunther fall in love with the place. “It’s somewhat cage-like and reminds me of illustrations where characters are trapped in the belly of a whale, or in its mouth, beneath the palate,” she says. All of which might sound intimidating, if not for the fact that Gunther has decorated her home with a keen eye for bright pops of color, soft rugs, and plenty of playthings for her young daughter. After all, “Whatever space you live in is ultimately a backdrop,” Gunther says. “Putting one’s own imprint on it is essential.”
