Want to Buy This Building in Carroll Gardens? Keep The 97-Year-Old Italian Bakery Downstairs Alive.
"They want to see the institution continue," said a broker representing the Carroll Gardens property and its current owners
Mazzola Bakery, known for its peppery, salami-and-provolone-packed lard breads (a personal favorite of a certain incredibly active BKMAG food critic), has hit the market for the first time in decades. But the current owners won’t let it go to just anyone.
The Caravello family, who bought the building with a nearly century-old Italian bakery in Carroll Gardens directly from the Mazzolas in 1980, insists the next owners keep the 97-year-old business alive, according to Nicole Galluccio, the agent representing the property. “You can’t just have our dirt in prime Carroll Gardens,” Gallucio told Crain’s. “They want to see the institution continue.”
Mazzola Bakery opened at 192 Union Street, at the corner of Henry, in 1928. It was owned and ran by Nicolo Mazzola and his four sons, Peter, Dominick, Angelo, and Benny for over 50 years, treating the neighborhood to traditional recipes brought over from his hometown of Palermo, Italy, before it was sold to Francesco Caravello, a former barber who jumped into the bread and pastry business, and left the operation to his own kids, now the proprietors of the bakery along with Mazzola’s grandson, John.
Both the building at 192 Union St., the bakery’s current and original location, with three apartments upstairs, and the neighboring property at 194 Union St., a fully residential four-story building with four units, are included in the listing for about $9.8 million.
