Zohran Mamdani on Pace for Historic Win in NYC Mayoral Race
Mamdani may have pulled off the unthinkable
With more than 90% of votes counted, 33-year-old Queens assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is leading former governor Andrew Cuomo by 7.1% in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor.
And Cuomo appears to have already thrown in the towel. According to Politico, Cuomo conceded the race late Tuesday evening and claimed to have called his rival Mamdani to congratulate him on the victory. “Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo lamented on stage against a giant red, white, and blue “Cuomo for Mayor” banner at the headquarters of the NYC carpenters’ union. “Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night,” praising the Queens lawmaker’s campaign during his speech, and even asking the crowd to give Mamdani a round of applause.

Should the math hold—as of 11:30 p.m., Mamdani’s 43.5% to Cuomo’s 36.4% with 92% of first-choice votes counted, per the New York Times counter—Mamdani will have pulled off an unlikely, previously unthinkable, win for young progressives over the Democratic establishment. Favored in virtually all but a few recent polls, Cuomo’s defeat comes as an unlikely, some say unthinkable, upset—a truly historic win for a young progressive over the aging Democratic establishment for the top seat in the country’s biggest city.
The final results of the Democratic primary are expected to be announced by the NYC Board of Elections on July 1.
