People Can't Stop Posting Their Brooklyn Mirage Nostalgia

Now firmly a month passed due, the Brooklyn Mirage launch (or lack thereof) has inspired its share of scorn from those left holding tickets for shows that have been relocated, rescheduled, or cancelled altogether.

But it also has some folks in their feelings, pining for the good old displaced palms of the venue’s glory days. In fact, a quick scroll down Reddit—a space typically littered with spicy missed connections and bland neighborhood conspiracies—reveals a surprisingly wide blast radius for the nostalgia bomb set off by all of the venue’s drama over the last few weeks.

One sub-group in particular, r/avesNYC, has effectively become a living memorial to Brooklyn Mirage’s prime, a landing zone for so much recent reminiscing—not just over the trees or the price of admission, but the energy showgoers encountered there, and seemingly then (whenever it is they’re referring to). “Not an LED Wall or Laser Beam in sight. Just vibes,” wrote a user who shared an old clip from a 2017 show. Others are posting videos and images from almost a decade back. But then there are, of course, the palms: so, so many photos of the venue’s palm trees, inexplicably planted about 1,000 miles north of anywhere they could conceivably survive for more than a single season.

We went down the rabbit hole and found some of the more touching Brooklyn Mirage memories; some sad, some hopeful, but all great reminders of how long its been since the venue had its shit together. And while there’s still no clear end to its safety and inspection woes, here’s hoping someone at Avant Gardner takes note of just how sorely they appear to be missed.
