5-Year-Old Scaffolding Set to Come Down at Brooklyn Tech
Following years of repairs, the city will start removing the eyesore in January.
After more than five years, the scaffolding covering Brooklyn Technical High School is coming down.
As Gothamist reports, the scaffolding has masked Brooklyn Tech’s exterior since 2019, when the city began repairs on the 90-year-old school—the largest high school in the five boroughs. It will start to remove it in January.
The School Construction Authority told the outlet that the scope of the repairs to the building’s roof and facade meant the scaffolding had to stay up for years. New cracks appeared following the earthquake that hit the region last April, prolonging the work. Now, the city is close to finishing.
“We recognize that the scaffold has been a source of frustration for the community,” the authority said in a statement.
Next month, when Brooklyn Tech’s nearly 6,000 students return to class following the holiday, the scaffolding that’s greeted them from their first day at the school will no longer be there.
“We had scaffolding for a very long time, then they removed it, and the next day this one came up,” a neighborhood resident said.
