Brooklyn Brief: New York Liberty beat Lynx in overtime to win their first WNBA title
Plus, Shawn Mendes pays tribute to Liam Payne — and when to expect the season's first measurable snowfall in New York
It’s a good day to be a Brooklynite: The New York Liberty held off the Minnesota Lynx in overtime for a stunning 67-62 win in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals at Barclays Center on Sunday night to claim the first title in their 28-year franchise history.
Power forward Jonquel Jones scored 17 points in propelling the home team — one of the original franchises in the league — to victory. The Liberty, who had made the WNBA Finals five times before, including last season, lost every one.
There are just 10 more days until Halloween and, if that’s not scary enough, 14 days until the presidential election.
Here’s some more news you can use to start your week as you digest that.
In the news
- Musician Shawn Mendes paid an emotional tribute to the recently departed One Direction singer Liam Payne at his Brooklyn Paramount concert on Friday night, reports Billboard. Mendes dedicated his new song “Heart of Gold” to Payne.
- “The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition,” the Brooklyn Museum’s 200th-anniversary show, is a “maximalist” and “dazzling” display of creativity from Brooklyn’s local artists, reports the Wall Street Journal.
- It’s not even Halloween, but we already have an estimate of when the first measurable snowfall should arrive in New York: December 13, reports The Weather Channel.
- Queer country crooner Orville Peck packed out Brooklyn Paramount on Saturday and Sunday nights during his Stampede Tour. The South African singer-songwriter’s third LP “Stampede” includes duets with Willie Nelson and Australian pop star Kylie Minogue.
- Netflix will develop the movie “Pride,” about Afro-Latina teen Zuri Benitez, who fights to preserve her Bushwick neighborhood and manage family chaos, reports Deadline. The movie is based on Jane Austen’s Regency-era novel “Pride and Prejudice,” and comes from President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground.
- The Brooklyn Botanic Garden could soon have a contentious new neighbor, reports Gothamist. A 10-story high-rise apartment is proposed to go up at 962-70 Franklin Avenue, across the street from the Garden. Should the high-rise be approved, it could cast a shadow over a section of the 113-year-old Botanic Garden.
- Pitchfork writes about 10 albums that define the legacy of Brownsville rapper Ka, who died unexpectedly last week at the age of 52.
