Even before launching her self-titled collection in spring 2011, Suzanne Rae had been making collections under the radar for a few years, “as a kind of a trial run to see if I could really do it,” she says. Since then, the line’s kept growing, and Rae recently joined the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator at Pratt, a resource specifically created “integrate the environment and society into their bottom line and explore the relationship of technology, product and fashion.”
“In the future, I want the line to stay true and expand upon to the principles upon which the brand was founded,” Rae explains. “That it keeps exploring and redefining femininity alongside feminism, as well as applying as many forms of sustainability as possible (from fabric sourcing and manufacturing to daily practices in the studio).” Rae admits that “for my aesthetic sometimes it’s hard to find cool, modern, high-tech looking fabrics that aren’t contributing to the environmental damage,” and as for how she balances ethical sourcing with reasonable price points, she jokes, “I do a lot of meditation.”
