The Anatomy of Marriage: The 10 Most Dysfunctional Married Couples in Literature
Clare Kendry and Jack Bellew
Passing, Nella Larsen
“It hurt. It hurt like hell. But it didn’t matter, if no one knew.”
Nella Larsen’s Passing is an exquisite novel, and one of the best examples of the power of unreliable narration that I can think of. And it’s all about lies. The lies we tell ourselves and the lies we tell others. One of these lies is at the center of a truly terrible marriage. It’s one thing to lie a little bit to a spouse, I guess, but we might all consider drawing the line when it comes to lying about our racial background to a bigoted blowhard who just happens to be our husband. Just a thought!
