The Anatomy of Marriage: The 10 Most Dysfunctional Married Couples in Literature

Frank and April Wheeler
Revolutionary Road, Richard Yates
“Being alone has nothing to do with how many people are around.”
The lesson in this novel, I think, is don’t move to the suburbs. Or maybe it’s just not to get married at all. Or maybe it’s not to stay in a marriage that is stifling and oppressive and full of affairs and unhappiness and thwarted dreams of going to Paris. There are, I guess, many lessons to be gained by reading the tragic story of Frank and April Wheeler (not the least of which is never try and perform your own abortion), but most of all, if you recognize your own relationship in that of the Wheelers, stop whatever you’re doing and get the hell out of it.
