1993’s “Storm of the Century”
Again, the name tells you a lot here. This blizzard affected at least 26 states, caused $10 billion worth of damage, and even included “hurricane winds” and a good amount of lightning while it was at its worst. According to the History Channel, more than 15 Long Island homes were actually swept out to sea. It was bad for everyone, but is also notable as the first time the Weather Service had sophisticated enough techniques to understand the full magnitude of the storm far enough in advance to really do something about it. They issued blizzard warnings 48 hours prior, which would probably have been really helpful in, say, 1888.
