5 Depressing Pieces of Literature About Dysfunctional Families to Get You Through the Holidays
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea Yukio Mishima
I can’t think of a better time of year than the holiday season to read a book about lost dreams and shattered illusions and the brutal rejection of all that is sentimental and hypocritical (smarm!) than right now. Throw in some crazy Oedipal action and animal torture and you’ve got yourself a real holiday downer. But seriously, this book is amazing and will simultaneously make you feel empty and despondent and nihilistic (just like you normally feel during the holidays, right?) but also uplifted, because of how spare and beautiful the prose is. So…just read it. And then balance all this out by watching Fanny and Alexander, and, really, you’ll be set for the holidays! Ho ho ho, you guys. Ho ho ho.
