Gimme Shelter: The Homes of 8 Brooklyn Professionals
Newly elected Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is a born-and-bred Brooklynite; he attended Brooklyn Tech before going on to John Jay College and a distinguished career in both the New York Police Department and the New York State Senate. His career as a State Senator included fighting for gun control and marriage equality, and he has long been a supporter of animal rights, perhaps most famously when he spoke out against the slaughter of hundreds of geese in Prospect Park. But can the ethos of such a multifaceted man be encapsulated inside one apartment? As it turns out, yes, absolutely. “I was attracted to the chance to use my own creativity to turn it into a comfortable living space,” Adams, who spent two years renovating the space that was “a vacant shell” when he first saw it, says. The result is a warm space with an abundance of art; a beautifully restored, working fireplace; and gorgeous wood detailing. “I believe the most important element that makes a home is plenty of wood,” Adams says. “Our spirits appear to reach a higher mental state when we are near nature.”
