A Guide to “Brooklyn’s Lincoln Center”
BAM Harvey
A block away from BAM’s main building (not across the street as per a map in yesterday’s Times) and next-door to the new BRIC House, the Harvey is more than 100-years-old, a former vaudeville house called The Majestic. In the 40s, it was converted into a movie theater, but by the 60s had shuttered. (Thanks a lot, television!) But BAM would renovate it, reopening the theater in 1987 as a home for performing arts, retaining some of its decrepit charm while also reclaiming its grandeur. It was renamed a decade later for BAM’s retiring president Harvey Lichtenstein, who’d spearheaded the rehabilitation. This summer, it began showing movies again, becoming the borough’s fanciest old-fashioned movie palace. 651 Fulton Street.
