Which Brooklyn Neighborhoods Have the Most HIV Diagnoses?
South Brooklyn
In Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, there 85 new cases reported in 2011: 80 percent male, 50 percent black, 50 percent men who have sex with men, more than one third in their twenties. Everyone (outside of those in a committed relationship between tested, trustworthy partners) should of course be practicing safe sex, but those in at-risk groups especially should be taking extra precautions. While HIV/AIDS treatment has come a long way, it’s still a terrible, deadly disease. Aside from the 978 new diagnoses in Brooklyn in 2011, there were also 477 deaths.
