Southern Brooklyn
Neighborhoods here report relatively few HIV cases: Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge together had 27 diagnoses, just above Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay’s 26. In Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, whites accounted for 44.4 percent of cases, and blacks for almost 30 percent, even though they make up less than 2 percent of the population there. In Coney/Sheepshead, the diagnoses were evenly spread across homosexuals and heterosexuals, between blacks, whites and Latinos. Canarsie and Flatlands together reported 75 cases, most notably with a high number of women: 44 percent of cases involved females, compared to 3.7 percent in Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst or 16.2 percent in Williamsburg/Bushwick.
