An Artisanal Food Tour of Brooklyn
JoMart Chocolates
You could spend an entire weekend just visiting local chocolatiers, from Mast Brothers in Williamsburg (impressively bearded brothers Rick and Michael are practically the poster children for the artisanal movement) to the new Fine & Raw factory in Bushwick and of course, Jacques Torres in DUMBO (soon to be Sunset Park). But we’re giving a shout out to the old-school JoMart in Midwood, which has been hand-producing marshmallows, caramels, and chocolate-covered everything since 1946. Owner Michael Rogak still uses the same stove and copper kettles his dad bought 60 years ago, and the community still clamors for the Brooklyn Chunkies (studded with roasted cashews and raisins), Raspberry Jellies, and creamy Chocolate Halvah. And besides, if you’re going to make the trek all the way out to Midwood, you’ll have no excuse not to also stop at DiFara’s for their gold standard pizza pie.
