An Artisanal Food Tour of Brooklyn

Brooklyn Brine
Yes, yes, pickles are to Brooklyn’s artisanal movement as waxed mustaches are to hipsters. Commence eye-rolling here. But if you’re going to spend $10 on a jar of acidulated cucumbers, let it be at a (legitimately local) business like Brooklyn Brine. Midwood native Shamus Jones makes all matter of inventive fermented veggies at his humble Gowanus shop, like Chipotle Carrots, Moroccan Beans, Curried Squash and Lavender Asparagus, as well as a line of spirit-infused pickles using Dogfish Head Ale and gin from Finger Lakes Distilling. And although he’s no longer offering classes, Jones is still happy to whisk you behind the scenes for a peek at the brining, bottling, labeling and shipping action. Woo hoo! Just don’t forget to pick up some tasty Whiskey Sours or Maple Bourbon Bread and Butters on the way out.
