The Cicada Apocalypse!: or 5 Ways Brooklyn Has Changed In the Last 17 Years

So, everyone—possibly even the cicadas, though they’ve been underground—knows that crime in New York City has dropped precipitously in the last couple of decades. But sometimes looking at the cold, hard statistics is enough to make you shake your head and think to yourself that maybe, maybe, things aren’t all that bad in 2013. Like, did you know that everyone in New York was feeling pretty, pretty good about themselves in 1996 because there were only “515 murders reported from Jan. 1 to June 30” of that year? And this was a vast improvement from 1993, when there were 933 murders registered within that timeframe. TO put that in perspective, in 2012, there were 414 murders during the entire year. That’s crazy. The cicadas are probably flipping their shit over this.
