Seriously? A Fucking Dolphin in the Gowanus Canal?!
In 2003, a year-old harp seal dubbed “Gowanda” was spotted in the Canal; Loch Ness-esque rumors about the seal had existed for years (even though it was only one), the Times reported. Amazingly, it seemed to have survived there for some time, though it was very sick by the time it was rescued. “The seal clambered out of the water and made its way over broken asphalt and glass,” the paper reported. “Blood was smeared across the seal’s muzzle, and it lay on its side in the snow, with steam streaming off its skin. It munched a little snow and languidly waved a flipper that was tattooed with lesions.” The animal was rehabilitated and released into the Long Island Sound. Hooray for happy endings! [photo]
