Brooklyn Homesteader’s Next Project: A Farm in New Jersey
You’ve already made a beekeeping how-to video; what other instructional videos from the farm do you plan to share?
Part of what I hope to accomplish at Seven Arrows is a series of live and recorded web classes that folks who can’t make it to the farm can learn from. My beekeeping class has been quite successful and I’m hoping to add classes ranging from chicken care, raising rabbits, home dairy, food preservation, composting, foraging, permaculture design, growing and using medicinal herbs and sustainable gardening. The goal is to get some of my friends to the farm to film the classes that benefit from more hands on demonstration, but whats great is that instructors from all over the world could teach their skills remotely with presentations and video.
Will they still be applicable to the urban homesteader?
Absolutely. I’ve always aimed to appeal to the individual looking to learn how to be some self-sufficient. Most of what we will be doing at Seven Arrows will be on a micro-scale. An acre of vegetables, a small number of dairy goats, a small flock of egg laying hens, a mini orchard, foraging and fishing in public spaces. It’s all do-able regardless of where you are.
What are you looking forward to most about the change of scenery?
Being able to be truly alone from time to time. You’re never alone in NYC and it’s kind of overwhelming. Having people in your headspace all of the time is a challenging thing to get used to. I feel like I’ve been thriving in NYC but man, I cannot wait to eat a sandwich on the pier by myself….well, I’ll have the seagulls as company but I won’t mind.
