Discover Global Sounds at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival This Week
Artists from around the world and around the block take to the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival this week, showcasing a wide range of musical stylings that will continue throughout the rest of the summer.
The locals kick things off on Thursday, July 13, when New Jersey native Robert Randolph and Grammy Award-winning Eric Krasno, a New York native, take the stage. After spending his childhood in the House of God Church in Orange, New Jersey, as a young pedal steel player steeped in gospel music, Randolph has become one of the greatest living guitarists as an adult. His funk-and-soul quartet, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, offers wildly energetic renditions of the music—and they bring it all to the bandshell.
Presented in association with the Latin Alternative Music Conference, British producer & DJ Quantic (aka Will Holland) will perform live on Friday, July 14. Quantic has traveled the world collecting sonic treasures since the age of 16, creating a sound that is rooted in the richness of the golden age of recording with a fearless modern bite for the dance floor. After a move to Cali, Colombia, in 2007, Holland explored an ardent interest in tropical rhythms, which he brings to his music. The evening begins with two promising young Latin American artists: NYC-via-Argentina pop maestro Tei Shi and Alex Anwandter from Chile.
Lastly, celebrate a belated Bastille Day on Saturday, July 15, with French singer-songwriter Ben l’Oncle Soul, who has an uncanny knack for the sounds and sights of Stax-era soul. His 2010 debut on Motown Records captured his retro stylings to a T, with intricate arrangements and soaring melodies that are “sweet, smooth … and immediately impressive,” (BBC) in a blend of English and French. He is joined by New Orleans-based Sweet Crude, who will show off their bilingual pop to set the stage.
