There’s only one free summer-long outdoor concert and performance series in New York City that has been presenting talent from around the world and around the block for nearly 40 years: the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. This year’s season welcomes more than 75 artists for 25 free performances at the Prospect Park Bandshell from June through August.
Lake Street Dive opens this year’s BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival with a rollicking mix of R&B, jazz, soul, and ’60s-era rock. This modern day quartet is known for its exhilarating live performances, and you can see for yourself on Wednesday, June 7 at 8:00PM at the Prospect Park Bandshell! Based on their sold out performance at Radio City Music Hall last year, this show will be a fantastic and fun opening night.
But Lake Street Dive is just the beginning. R&B-meets-jazz songstress Alice Smith takes the stage on Saturday, June 10. Her 2006 debut, For Lovers, Dreamers & Me, leapt out of the gate with a Grammy Award in the Best Urban/Alternative category, and the album earned a re-release on Epic Records following a bidding war. Her long-awaited sophomore album, She, was released in 2013 and is an intoxicating mixture of rock, pop and R&B. She is joined by neo-soul vet Bilal and pianist/composer Kris Bowers for the show, which starts at 7PM. Later this month, experimental rock trio Yeasayar makes their Bandshell debut on Thursday, June 22, with Poliça and Cymbals Eat Guitars opening the show.
All summer long, enjoy 25 free performances—all under the stars at the Prospect Park Bandshell—including The Soul Rebels featuring Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and Kirk Knight, Admiral T, Nels Cline, Whitney, Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, Andrew Bird, Esperanza Spalding, Chronixx, a live score to the Oscar-winning film Selma, and the gravity-defying dance moves of Pilobolus. And you definitely don’t want to miss our closing show with one of Africa’s biggest stars Youssou N’Dour!
Mark your calendars and we’ll see you #AtTheBandshell for a stellar summer of concerts and performances starting June 7!
