Brooklyn Is Smoking Manhattan in Job Growth
Not sure if you’ve heard: Brooklyn has—what’s that word?—cachet. Cachet of all kinds. So, Manhattan can have its Manhattanhenge x Pokémon Go hybrid spectacle. We don’t need it. We’ve got other things. Not just fun things, like the best sandwiches ever, and really hilarious people, outstanding pizza by the slice, and attractions galore for great dates—no. We’ve got something cooler than that. We’ve got jobs, and we’re getting more fast.
New city stats show that job growth in Brooklyn, over the past two years, has increased at twice the rate as that in Manhattan, the Daily News reports. Through the end of 2015, new jobs in Brooklyn grew 11.6%; in Manhattan, that number was 5.6% over the same period, according to calculations by the city’s Economic Development Corporation.
In fact, the average job growth of all outer boroughs combined still beat job growth in Manhattan: Staten Island, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn together produced an 8.96% growth rate, compared to 5.6% in Manhattan.
Ok, I know what you’re about to ask for—real numbers. Technically, Manhattan still added more jobs (118,396) than Brooklyn (58,444), which came in second in terms of raw job numbers. But, given the rate at which we’re filling jobs (again, twice as quickly as Manhattan) it can be assumed that we’ve got a lot more jobs yet to fill, and that we’ll continue to do so at a very fast pace. And that is great news indeed.
In response to this growth, Mayor de Blasio had more encouraging words. “We’ve been targeting investments towards historically underserved communities,” he said, “and focusing on both raising wages and creating accessible, middle class jobs.” Yes, Brooklyn: Where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and a lot more people than before are employed.
