Brooklyn Commune Is Home to Some of the Best Vegan Food in the Borough
When it comes to vegan food, it can sometimes feel like all the focus is on the ingredients, and not so much on taste. There are definitely some notable exceptions, but for the most part, it can be hard to find meat- and dairy-free options that don’t leave something to be desired when it comes to taste. Unless, of course, you visit Brooklyn Commune.
Located in Windsor Terrace, right above the Fort Hamilton F/G stop, Brooklyn Commune isn’t a vegan- or even vegetarian-only restaurant—but it is vegan-friendly, which is still pretty hard to find, particularly when the vegan dishes are elevated to practically an art form, as they are here. This is perhaps best proven with the spot’s vegan burger, a behemoth of a sandwich that squashes any preconceptions of the puny veggie burger, via its double-decker layering of adzuki bean and rice patties between dollops of avocado and smoked mustard spreads, and mounds of pickled onions, all topped by a flaxseed bun.
Beyond, the vegan burger, Brooklyn Commune also has plenty of other vegan treats, including the tofu scramble (tofu, onions, peppers, smoked tempeh “bacon” and mixed greens); the Vietnamese rice salad (spinach, seasoned rice, shiitake mushrooms, Thai basil, lemon soy vinaigrette, toasted coconut); the Not-So-Classic TLT (smoked tempeh, guacamole, tomato jam, lettuce, grilled sourdough); the weekends-only vegan French Toast (flaxseed and hemp milk French Toast, chia seeds, berries, local organic maple syrup, coconut cream); and candied citrus beets (coriander-citrus marinated beets).
