Prepare for the Weird, Hairy Glory of the Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition
In the past decade or so, the ubiquity of the so-called “Brooklyn Beard” has inspired countless thinkpieces on the social symbolism of free-flowing facial hair; photoblogs by local beard paparazzi; facial hair transplants among the naturally beardless; and concerns from the scientific community that we have reached “Peak Beard.” Perhaps the weirdest and most glorious event to emerge from this trend is the Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition, which returns on September 5th.
The 8th annual competition will reward the most impressive facial foliage in all the land. Co-hosts Don Jamieson of VH1’s That Metal Show and Adam RealMan, who both tend to sport Wolverine-like mutton chops, will lead a panel of hairy celebrity judges.
Contest categories include The Brass Ring (best beard), Coney Island Curl (best styled moustache), Moustachio Marvel (best natural moustache), Ballyhoo Beard (styled beard), Man or Beast (natural beard), Hokum and Hoodwinked (best fake facial hair), Come Out To Play (best team facial hair), and Carny Trash (worst facial hair).
So stock up on beard oil and moustache wax and prepare for a night of beard peacocking to be remembered.
The 8th annual Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition happens on September 5th at Sideshows by the Seashore (1208 Surf Avenue) at 6pm. It’s $20 for participants and audience members.
