A Skyscraper as Tall as the Empire State Building is Probably Coming to Downtown Brooklyn
The Brooklyn skyline’s insane growth spurt could soon culminate in the building of a 1,000-plus-foot skyscraper at 9 DeKalb Avenue, Crain’s New York reports. In renderings, the generic-looking dark gray tower resembles a gigantic tombstone for the borough.
Real estate developers Joe Chetrit and Michael Stern, who built one of Manhattan’s tallest luxury condo towers on so-called Billionaires’ Row, have made a $90 million deal to acquire the former Dime Savings Bank of New York. This 150-year-old landmarked Neo-Roman building, with its domed roof, comes with 300,000 square feet of development rights on the same block. If built in this spot, the tower will neighbor famed restaurant Junior’s. It would be the first New York City building outside of Manhattan to rise above 1,000 feet. The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet tall. Let the interborough architectural dick-measuring contest begin!
