Extra! Extra!: 5 Must-Try Brooklyn Condiments
Summer food is all about simplicity: burgers, sandwiches, and snacks like chips and dips. Such basic fare demands to be complemented by strong flavors like smoky chipotle salsa or ultra-tangy mustard. These five Brooklyn-made condiments are what we reach for when we want to give our food an extra, not-so-subtle flavor boost.
1. Tree’s Knees Spicy Syrup
Sweet and fiery, this syrup is suited to savory dishes (try it as a marinade for grilled shrimp) and also works when mixed into tequila for a new take on a margarita.
2. Brooklyn Delhi Roasted Garlic Achaar
Redolent of lemon, turmeric, and, yes, garlic, this ultra-flavorful relish works well on anything, but we particularly like it as an atypical addition to hot dogs.
3. Sweet Deliverance Blackberry Lavender Jam
Sweet and floral, this luscious jam is our favorite thing to spread on toast or mix into oatmeal. And it helps to make a killer PB&J.
4. Gustavo’s Chipotle Salsa
Smoky and spicy, this is the perfect salsa on everything from nachos to fish tacos. Use liberally. We do.
5. Anarchy in a Jar Umami Shiso Mustard
Described as having “crazy mouth magic,” this tart, savory mustard contains hints of Japan (not only due to the shiso leaf, but also because of the addition of matcha tea) and is excellent on sandwiches or on a cheese plate.
