The pilot of a LaGuardia Airport-bound jet had to act fast this morning when an unmanned aerial vehicle—a drone—appeared in the passenger plane’s flight path, reports NBC New York. Shuttle America flight 2708 had flown from Washington, D.C. without issue and was within minutes of LaGuardia Airport near Prospect Park when it had to pull up 200 feet to avoid the drone. The plane later landed safely at the airport.
Under the Federal Aviation Administration’s “model aircraft” guidelines, flying a drone within five miles of an airport, which includes the Prospect Park airspace, is prohibited without prior notification to the airport.
