MetroCard Hikes Go Into Effect Sunday
Enjoy those $2.50 subway rides while you still can, because the MTA will be a lot harder on your wallet starting this weekend. Fare hikes take effect on Sunday, meaning that a single swipe will cost you $2.75. The last time fares went up was two years ago, when a ride rose from $2.25 to $2.50. In the heady days of 2009, a ride cost just $2.00. What a different six years makes.
Unlimited MetroCards will go from $112 to $116.50 per month, or from $30 to $31 per week. Tolls on the Verrazano, Queens Midtown Tunnel, and Throgs Neck Bridge will also rise. I guess the good news is that you’ll now get a larger bonus from loading money on your MetroCard–11 percent as opposed to the current 5 percent–but an extra 50 cents per round-trip is still a lot of money to shell out on a regular basis. At least our funds are going to a good cause, I mean giant Ipads.
