Stolen Brooklyn Bridge Flags Returned By German Artists
The American flags that were swiped from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge by German artists Mischa Leinkauf and Matthias Wermke have returned to American soil after a sojourn overseas, the NYPD confirmed late Thursday night.
The German and American embassies arranged the return of the precious flags this week, shortly after Leinkauf and Wermke claimed responsibility for the prank. The two had replaced the flags flying on the bridge with handmade bleached-out versions on July 22 in apparent tribute to the birthday of the German designer of the bridge.
Last week, the artist duo claimed that the stunt was not politically motivated, and expressed surprise that law enforcement officials had gotten so freaked out about the whole thing.
“They returned the flags to the embassy,” an NYPD spokesperson told ABC News. “There has been no determination of charges.”
