Your Underdog Show of the Week: Amanda X at Death By Audio

Yesterday we offered scientific proof that this is the best week for free shows ever in the world (see: Sleigh Bells, HAIM, St. Vincent, Future Islands, Omar Souleyman and more). Even shoving the freebies aside for a moment, we still have marquee names Nick Cave, Modest Mouse and newly crowned big deal FKA twigs trotting through town (imagine Nick Cave literally trotting) so, yeah, it’s a good week for live music in the city.
If you concentrate too much on the highlighter shows, though, you might miss Amanda X at Death by Audio on Friday, which would be a shame on account of the Philly trio hitting the perfect balance of meticulousness (there are plenty of carefully executed dual harmonies) and just not giving a damn (they’re obviously having fun up there in front of a crowded basement). Amnesia, their just-released debut via Siltbreeze, comes off as how smudged post-punk might sound to someone recovering from the titular head condition: blaring enough to demand attention, but blown out enough to not frightened anyone away.
They’ll be joined by math-y punks Two Inch Astronaut, melodic grunge enthusiasts Wing Dam, and pop weirdos Cousin Brian on Friday. Tickets are $8, which is the exact amount of loose change you have in your couch.
