A Spacey Evening in Marine Park
Heads up! All month long you can catch the Perseid meteor shower. But don’t crane your neck too much, because there’s a special viewing of the annual shower at the Salt Marsh Nature Center in Marine Park on the 9th.
It’s difficult enough to see a single star on a clear night in NYC, so Urban Park Rangers planned a free evening of stargazing and meteor shower viewing at what was deemed the best possible location considering the urban light pollution that taints many a starry night. The meteor shower, which peaks every year around the second week in August, is supposed to be at its most visible on August 9th. “It will be exceptionally bright that day, since it is right before a full moon,” Judith Velosky, a Sergeant Park Ranger told Brooklyn Daily. According to the park’s site, rangers will be discussing science, history, and folklore of the universe—with telescopes at the ready.
They can’t promise you’ll see a shooting star, but it’s all about wishful thinking.
