First Look: DUMBO’s Refurbished Empire Stores

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve been pretty distracted by the forthcoming DUMBO Heights tech complex, especially following the news that Etsy had signed a 10-year lease in the new office building and was being given $5 million in tax credits for doing so.
Meanwhile, the Empire Stores, a truly massive new complex rising on the DUMBO waterfront in a warehouse formerly occupied by coffee purveyors, is making huge strides toward completion.
On Friday, Curbed NY came across new renderings of the upcoming development and we have to say, it looks really, really lovely. The 387,000 square foot building will feature 300,000 square feet of office space, 80,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and event space and a 7,000 square foot landscaped rooftop with more event space.

Big names are already eyeing the new space and back in March, we reported that West Elm and La Colombe, already paired at the hip in a store near the corner of Washington and Front Streets in DUMBO, would be moving into a 10,000 square foot space in the complex come 2016. It’s only a matter of time before others follow their example, especially with a rendering as enticing as the one from above.
Still, here’s hoping that interested parties can afford the record breaking $90/square foot the developers, Midtown Equities, are asking for.
