NYC Pride Parade Invites Catholic League President To March Under “Straight Is Great” Banner
There’s no better way to stick it to a bigot than to prove that you’re the bigger person.
Yesterday, NYC Pride March Director David Studinski issued a statement inviting Catholic League president Bill Donahue to join this year’s Gay Pride Parade, which will kick off at noon on June 29.The offer was in direct response to Donahue’s assertion that Gay Pride organizers would never allow straight people to march beneath a “Straight Is Great” banner. Now, he’s eating those words.
“Mr. Donahue and his group are free to participate in the 2014 March. His group’s presence affirms the need for this year’s Pride theme, ‘We Have Won When We’re One.’ Straight is great – as long as there’s no hate,”read Studinski’s statement. In an interview with Gothamist, the parade’s managing director, Chris Frederick, confirmed that the offer was genuine and that as long as the Catholic League didn’t infringe on other people’s beliefs, they’d be welcome to take part in what is easily one of New York City’s most joyous days. Donahue and his supporters have yet to formally respond, but that’s probably because they’re too busy boycotting Guinness—for boycotting against them.
And the world keeps turning…
