What to Do at Every Stop Along the R Train
Bay Ridge Avenue
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Owl’s Head Park lately, which is only a few blocks away from this stop. Like Fort Greene, it’s a leafy, hilly oasis, with a few peculiar perks: one of Brooklyn’s only skate parks, a bona fide stretch of woods, and two enormous hills: one on the eastern side, best for sledding, and one on the western, best for watching the sunset. (Summer resolution: watch more sunsets.) Now that you’re all the way down here, you’re also close to the lengthy Shore Road park system, including its waterfront promenade and, over here, the pier. If you find yourself walking toward the park and look up only to see clouds (no sunset) or rain (no pier), just duck into Three Jolly Pigeons, an Irish Haven-esque bar with impossibly inexpensive prices and nice stained-glass detailing.
