Green-Wood Cemetery, Greenwood Heights
“NYC’s Like a Graveyard” according to antifolk heroes the Moldy Peaches, which may be up for debate anywhere in the city except for here, Green-Wood Cemetery. Founded in 1838 as one of the country’s first rural cemeteries, it’s an ideal Brooklyn stop for any history buff, nature lover and/or Instagram opportunist. In fact, it once rivaled Niagara Falls as the country’s most popular tourist attraction. That was back in 1860, but today there’s a cathedral facade you pass at its entrance. There are lakes to look at while contemplating the meaning of life, paths to be walked, hills to be daydreamed on. There’s a morning yoga series during the summer and flashlight-lit walking tours at night. There are Revolutionary War landmarks along the way. Plus bountiful cherry blossoms in the spring.
