An Interview with Todd Selby about his Collaboration with Svbscription
In the years since starting his eponymous blog, Todd Selby has become renowned not only for his work as a photographer, author, and illustrator, but also for his ability to curate the beautiful things that he comes across on his many travels, so that he can share them with the world. For the most part, Selby has shared his vision with the public through his blog, his two books—The Selby Is In Your Place and Edible Selby—and through collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton, Nike, and Ikea. Now, however, Selby has teamed up with the Brooklyn-based company Svbscription, for a limited edition package which will “include a selection of items from The Selby’s favourite creatives from around the globe.” I spoke with Selby about where he draws his inspiration, what places he always wants to visit, and why he keeps coming back to New York.
How did you come to work with Svbscription for this collaboration?
They called me and asked if I would be interested in participating and I told them I was in right away.
What is it, do you think, that makes people so curious about each other’s homes?
Human nature is to be nosy.
What are the types of things that make a house into a home—transforming a space into something intimate and personal?
Personal touches, your belongings and how you feel about a place.
What are the things in your home that you feel are essential—what things would you grab first in a fire?
My hard drives and my fiancée.
Is every home a refuge, or are there certain qualities that are required in a home to make it an ideal place for relaxation?
It’s totally personal, there’s no universal truth about that.
You are someone who travels a lot and clearly loves to explore. Where are some of your favorite places to go, and what in those places has most inspired you?
Some of my favorites places to be are Tokyo, London, NYC and Auckland. Any chance to go somewhere new is also something I love to do. I love to walk and explore new cities.
What inspires you most about New York and makes you keep wanting to come back?
It’s such a walking city, you can just walk and see everything. It’s so fun and free in that way.
