Strong Drinks
Well. I can’t really do this list right without recommending that you drink your way through this heat wave. Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and everything, but also, make sure you stay hydrated by drinking lots of rum. That’s right. Rum. Personally, I’ve always been a gin drinker in the summer, and I’m not planning on straying too far from that time-proven recipe of alcohol success, but lately, when it’s been uncomfortably hot out, I’ve been drawn to rum. Drinking rum almost automatically makes you feel like you’re on vacation, doesn’t it? And you can add to that feeling if, say, you go to a bar early in the morning, a bar like Achilles Heel in Greenpoint, and drink a daiquiri or two (these are not the frozen monstrosities that are served on cruise ships, they are elegant concoctions that taste sweet and sour and summery) and then hop on the ferry at India Street and stand on the upper deck so that you can feel the sun and so that you can avoid the conference room-like aura that the interior of the ferry possesses and feel good about the fact that, yes, it’s hotter than hell, but that also, you’ve spent your whole life coming to terms with the fact that you weren’t made out for heaven anyway, so you better get used to the heat. This is just the beginning. It’s only going to get hotter. You might as well embrace it.
