In Memoriam: 10 Much Mourned Brooklyn Institutions
The Brooklynite
Obviously there are several great magazines about Brooklyn that are in existence right now. Well, at least two. But, after discovering back issues of The Brooklynite at the Brooklyn Historical Society, I can’t help but miss that particular Brooklyn magazine. Even though the magazine had but a four-year run (1926-1930) the writing was incisive and witty and remains, in many ways, relevant today. I mean, even back then, Brooklyn was described as being a “bourgeois borough” full of “baby carriages, rubber plants, gold fish and green grocers.” I would love to see what those writers could come up with today. And the covers are all Art Deco works of genius.
