21 Ways to Spend Your Teeny, Tiny Tax Refund
16) Tecate and Tater Tots: Head over to Pork Slope and drink Tecate from a can ($4) while eating tater tots (also $4) at the bar. Can you get a six-pack of Tecate for less than that? Sure. But those tater tots are fucking worth the splurge.
Pork Slope; 247 5th Avenue, Park Slope
17) Happy Hour: At 68 Jay, well drinks are $4 during happy hour. You can get two plus still tip a buck a drink. Just because you are a cheap-skate doesn’t mean you should look like one. Also, you can get free goldfish, so you’re pretty much set for the afternoon, aren’t you?
68 Jay; 68 Jay Street, DUMBO
18) Wine and Poetry: Do you feel like having a little culture with your alcohol? Head over to the Owl’s Head in Bay Ridge on a night when the Bay Ridge Poet’s Society is meeting (it’s headed by our own Henry Stewart!) and engage your mind while also engaging your palate with a glass of exceptional Rioja ($10). Sip slowly so the warmth lingers.
The Owl’s Head; 479 74th Street, Bay Ridge
19) Something Non-Alcoholic? Yes!: Ok, so this is surprising even me, but I’m recommending something without alcohol. Something that is actually good for you. And that is the green tea au lait from Supercore. It’s only $5, which means you can also nibble on some edamame ($2.50) while you’re being all virtuous. Good for you. For being virtuous. Major hat-tip.
Supercore; 305 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg
20) Six Packs and a Sunset: This is the most basic of pleasures. Go get yourself over to Sunset Park and pop into a deli. Grab a couple of six packs of whatever cheap beer is on hand. Is it Schlitz? Go with Schlitz. Climb up to the top of the hill in Sunset Park and pray to the gods that you’ve timed it right. Sit your ass down and watch the sun set over New York Harbor while you drink beer after beer from a brown paper bag. You brought someone you love, didn’t you? And maybe a book of Frank O’Hara poems? Or James Salter’s “A Sport and a Pastime” so that you can read out loud to one another? You didn’t? You’re fucking hopeless.
Sunset Park; 44th Street and 5th Avenue, Sunset Park (duh)
