Your Northside Film Update: New York City Premieres, and Terence Nance & Ramin Bahrani Join the DIY Jury
Brooklyn-based cinephiles, start the countdown: Northside Film (June 17-20) is a mere two months away! Now in it’s fourth year, Northside Film is returning and bringing with it over 40 films, repertory picks and Brooklyn Premieres to your favorite neighborhood theaters. We’ve teamed up with some of the most talented people working in the film industry and beyond to handpick a lineup chock-full of documentaries, narratives, shorts and everything in between that will keep you pretty busy during the week of June 17. Let’s take a look at what our illustrious curatorial partners have lined up for June, shall we?
BAMcinemaFest is proud to present the New York Premiere of All the Light in the Sky (2012), from the master of the microbudget and the godfather of mumblecore himself, director Joe Swanberg (dir. Hannah Takes the Stairs, LOL, Kissing on the Mouth). Starring Jane Adams (aka the best part of Todd Solondz’s Happiness) and Sophia Takal (Green), All the Light in the Sky is classic Swanberg, capturing the chatty but intimate moments between an aging actress and her niece during a weekend spent at a Malibu beach house.
Other highlights include Kopfstand (Headstand) (dir. Ernst Josef Lauscher), presented by The L Magazine (hey, that’s us!). Kopfstand features a pre-Django, pre-Oscar Christoph Waltz in his first starring role; it hasn’t been screened in the United States since 1982, (which is before some of us were born) and who knows when it will be back, so we highly recommend picking up a ticket and picking it up early (information on purchasing individual screening tickets to come!).
Oscilloscope will present the New York Premiere of A Teacher, the directorial debut of Hannah Fidell, curated by Filmwax. The Sundance favorite stars Lindsay Burdge as a Texas high school teacher involved in an affair with one of her male students.
Oscilloscope proudly presents Who Took the Bomp (dir. Kerthy Fix), the 2010 documentary following Le Tigre on their 2004-2005 international tour. Who Took the Bomp features live performances, archived interviews, and intimate backstage footage of Le Tigre. Plus, director Kerthy Fix and Kathleen Hanna will be at the screening to answer your questions after the credits roll. But that’s not all! Please welcome Terence Nance, director of An Oversimplification of Her Beauty and Ramin Bahrani, director of Chop Shop and Goodbye Solo to the 2013 Northside Film DIY Competition Jury. They’re joining fellow jurors Scott Macaulay (Jury Chair; editor, Filmmaker Magazine), Alex Karpovsky (actor, Girls; director, Rubberneck and Red Flag), Miriam Bale (founder, La Di Da Film Festival). Over the next few months, they will be reviewing our Northside Film DIY Competition submissions and deciding which lucky filmmakers will receive over $10,000 in cash and prizes, plus a special screening at Nitehawk Cinema.
Northside Film is taking place from June 17-20 at Nitehawk Cinema, UnionDocs, Williamsburg Cinema, Videology and the Wythe Hotel. Badges are on sale now for the absurdly low price of $25. That’s 40 films over four days for the cost of two tickets at your local megaplex. But those prices won’t last for long. Early bird deals end on Tuesday, April 30.
