Ladies and Gentlemen, Black Flag (and Swans, Lambchop, Iceage and More)
We’ve come to think of the Northside Festival as a showcase of the past, present and future incarnations of this so-called “Brooklyn sound” that has in many ways come to define independent music in the new millennium—a snapshot of its current state, with bands that are emerging, those next in line, and those that have paved the way, all rubbing elbows in Williamsburg and Greenpoint for four days in June. It’s a neat little trick that allows for a reformed Black Flag, helmed by main man Greg Ginn and Jealous Again-era vocalist Ron Reyes, making their first NYC appearance in 26 years(!) alongside hundreds of up-and-comers waiting to make the same impact for future generations.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, really. Swans, Lambchop, Son Volt and a special collaborative performance between composer-guitarist Rhys Chatham and hometown experimental heroes Oneida are early additions to the venerable band list. Iceage, WHY?, Merchandise, Chelsea Wolfe, Twin Sister, The Soft Moon, Milk Music, Kisses, Lower and Destruction Unit offer a glimpse of what’s in store when some of the most influential tastemakers from NYC and beyond curate showcases with bands they think you need to hear.
