Proposed MTA Fare Hikes Are Actually Pretty Reasonable
We’ve been dreading further news on these MTA fare hikes for a while now, but is anything worse than the terrible, crushing suspense of not knowing? “Terrible, crushing price hikes” I guess would be the answer, but the point is, the MTA is close to a final decision, and it looks like things will be ok.
Gothamist reports that when the MTA board votes to finalize plans on Wednesday, baseline fare will rise to $2.50 from $2.25, seven-day cards will rise from $29 to $30, and the monthly unlimited will jump from $104 to $112. The bonus will also be reduced from 7% to 5%.
So, not as terrible as we once thought. Yes, the ideal solution would definitely be “massive fare slash to the original 5-cents-per-ride price point” or, at the very least, no fare hike at all, but at this point we’ll take what we get.
