Video: The Gowanus Canal is About Two Flushes Away From Overflowing

Nick Burry, publisher of The L and Brooklyn Magazine, just braved the elements and took a stroll down to the Gowanus Canal to see what kind of trouble Sandy has caused so far. He came back with iPhone footage showing that the famously filthy waterway is dangerously close to overflowing. Apparently even “Brooklyn’s coolest superfund site” is not immune to Sandy’s wrath.
Also worth noting: When Nick sent this to me, I was listening to the beautiful, devastating “After the Fire is Gone“ by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, and it felt really, really good. Highly recommended.
Take a look. And stay safe. And don’t make any shitty, insensitive hurricane jokes on Twitter.
