Park Slope Gets into Bondage

Hardware stores across New York City are reporting a curious phenomenon: women are coming in to buy rope. And the New York Post says it’s because they’ve read Fifty Shades of Grey, the best-selling erotic novel whose sex scenes feature bondage and other forms of dominance and submission.
Tarzian Hardware in Park Slope, on Seventh Avenue near 2nd Street, has “seen a rash of rope sales. ‘It’s usually men buying rope, but the women, they’ve been coming in the last few months,’ cashier Christina Davila told the Post. ‘I’ve actually read the book. So when the women buy rope, it was kind of like, “Hmmm, that does seem a little unusual.”‘”
Babeland, a sex shop with stores in SoHo and Park Slope, reports an uptick in sales of 30 percent of “kinky products,” and also says visits to the bondage section of its website are up 81 percent, the paper reports. The store sells a Fifty Shades of Grey kit, the most expensive of which features restraints, a riding crop, and body powder. They’ve also started hosting classes inspired by the book. Friday’s had 300 people signed up as of last week—three times capacity.
