Boerum Hill’s “Dean of Brooklyn Reporters” Has Died

The “dean of Brooklyn reporters,” Dennis Holt, died last week at the age of 77 after a bad fall in his home last month, his newspaper, the Brooklyn Eagle, reports. A blow to the head and some broken ribs were exacerbated by one of his medications, a blood thinner. Holt was best known in recent years as a columnist for the daily paper, where he had worked since 1994. Before that, he had worked many years as a press adviser to several elected officials, and helped to found the now-defunct Brooklyn Phoenix newspaper.
Holt moved to Boerum Hill 40 years ago, the Carroll Gardens Patch reported in a profile last year, and was soon robbed. “We had a break in, and when the cop showed up he said, ‘What are people like you doing in a place like this?’ I said ‘We’re crazy,'” he told the website.
Holt was a regular reader of our sister publication The L Magazine. He didn’t always love it—he wrote an ambivalent-at-best column about the Best Blocks issue this past March, for example—but we always appreciated his readership and commentary.
