MCII, Mikal Cronin's sophomore album, is earning him rightful attention as a solo artist, and it shouldn't all be chalked up to the backing of ever-credible Merge Records. His songs are the cross section of garage rock's worn-in familiarity and a push against its apathetic stereotype, all while sounding incredibly catchy. SOLD OUT
In case you missed his show at Northside on Saturday, here's a second chance (GET IT?!) to catch the huskily cartoon-voiced rising star of hip-hop. We suggest you get on that, asap. $12
We hadn't heard much from Ben Schneider's Lord Huron since his Mighty EP threw a lot of critics for a loop toward the end of 2010, its bongo drums, maracas and other percussion swimming in the same sphere as open-road roots music. For something simultaneously evoking Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes, it went bizarrely under the radar. Then came the release of his first proper LP Lonesome Dreams late last year, and, bam, here we have a sold-out show at Webster Hall. That's more like it. SOLD OUT
Alejandro Rose-Garcia is probably most recognized as “The Swede” responsible for luring Julie’s heart on the second season of Friday Night Lights. This is convenient because his one-man band Shakey Graves is proudly, unarguably Texan. Texas forever, they say. His fingerpicking and stomps take on the grizzled weight of the Old West, but they can also expand into balladry aligned with (true Swede) The Tallest Man on Earth. In either scenario, he’s a fierce contrast to all the digitally driven bands du jour. SOLD OUT
Friday night outdoor concerts featuring bands like Fear of Men, Ex-Cult, and PAWS.
